How Does Proctoring Work?
UNC Online (UNCO) is custom software, created by the UNC System Office, that allows students to schedule a proctored exam appointment with UNCO’s approved, vetted proctors.
To use UNC Online, instructors create their actual exam (i.e., the exam questions) in their university’s LMS (i.e., Canvas, Blackboard, PeopleSoft) and then create a proctored exam in UNCO. The reason:
- UNCO does not have access to the LMS
- Proctors do not have access to the LMS
When instructors create an exam in UNCO, they are actually creating:
- The exam begin and end dates (i.e., exam window) that allow students to schedule an exam appointment during the exam window only
- Exam duration which allows students to schedule exam appts for the length of time you determine it will take them to complete your exam
- Exam instructions that outline your exam requirements (i.e., scrap paper, basic calculator)
Here's how Face-to-Face proctoring works...
Before the Exam Appointment:
- Proctor logs into UNCO to access the exam password, exam instructions, exam materials etc.
During the Exam Appointment:
- Student is Authenticated.
- Proctor ensures Required & Prohibited Materials are followed.
- For online exams:
- Student navigates to your exam in the LMS (i.e., Canvas, Blackboard, etc).
- Proctor asks student to turn away from monitor while proctor enters the exam password
- Student takes the exam while a proctor monitors.
After the Exam Appointment:
- Proctor Returns Exam Materials, according to exam type.
- Proctor Finalizes Exam Appt, according to details of the exam appt. NOTE: If an Irregularity occurs (i.e., cheating, power outage, etc) this information will be included as part of the exam appt finalization.
Here's how the WebCam Proctor (Examity) works...
Before the Exam Appointment:
- Examity proctor logs into UNCO to access the exam password, exam instructions, etc.
During the Exam Appointment:
- Student is Authenticated.
- Proctor ensures Required & Prohibited Materials are followed.
- Proctor reads the exam instructions, allowed items, etc.
- Student is required to follow the Rules of the WebCam Proctor (Examity) before and during appt:
- 360 degree room scan
- To ensure notes are not attached to the student’s monitor, students are required to show their monitor and desk area to the proctor using their cell phone's camera or using a mirror
- Student navigates to their exam in the LMS (i.e., Canvas, Blackboard, etc).
- With the student's permission, the Examity proctor remotes into the student's computer to securely enter the password. The student does not see the password.
- Student takes the exam while a live proctor monitors. Proctor will make note if the student violates any of the Instructor's, UNCO's or Examity's rules.
- A video and chat log of the exam appt are captured for review.
After the Exam Appointment: Examity Audits Twice
- The Examity proctor audits the appt during and immediately after the appt.
- Between 24-48 hours post-appt, a member of the Examity team audits the appt again.
- After the 2nd audit, the appt status will show "Finalized" or an "Incident Report" will be accessible. To learn more, click here.
