To minimize the cost of proctored exams, and conserve valuable proctoring resources, faculty members should do the following:
- Limit the number of proctored exams to 1-3 per semester.
- Enter exam details into UNC Online early in the semester. This action will permit students to schedule appointments in advance (free proctoring locations reach capacity well before midterm and final exams begin; students must schedule free appointments early in the semester).
- Many proctors charge an hourly rate. Therefore, it is important to enter accurate exam durations* into UNC Online (the true time it takes for students to complete exams; do not 'pad' exam durations). Since proctors reserve staffing and resources based on exam durations, students are required to pay the full cost of exam durations (even if they complete the exam in less than the allotted time).
*Typically, the final exam duration for online courses can be shorter than final exam duration for face-to-face courses. Please touch base with the Office of the Registrar to confirm the final online exam policy for your campus.
**If a student is permitted extended time due to a disability, the faculty member and proctor must coordinate the extended time outside of UNC Online.
